If You Don't Have It, Don't Spend It!

by Angie
(Crown Point, IN)

When of the best lessons I learned early on about staying on a budget is this one little rule...

If you don't have it, don't spend it!

That may seem a bit obvious, but with today's philosophy of "buy now, pay later" it makes a world of difference in your spending habits.

My mother taught us from a very young age that if we wanted something, we needed to save up for it until we could afford it. She taught us this by her example.

We live in a society that wants instant gratification and I believe that's why we have so much crippling debt that is causing stress and grief to families during these economically unstable times.

I may have to wait a little longer to indulge myself in some of the extra pleasures in life, but I think I probably enjoy my indulgences a little bit more as a result.

Thanks for such a practical and informative site!
